Generative Art Connections

Natural Language Systems

Lewitt's work often took the form of written instructions which could be executed later by others. The instructions often described marks or construction modules to be exhaustively combined presenting most or all possible permutations. As such the instructions presented generative systems autonomously creating detail beyond Lewitt's explicit instructions and not reflecting choices of the artisans executing them.

Quotes and Bibliography

"In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work . . . all planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes the machine that makes the art."

from "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art," Artforum, summer, 1967.
