== Biography == Maurits Cornelis Escher, who was born in Leeuwarden, Holland in 1898, created unique and fascinating works of art that explore and exhibit a wide range of mathematical ideas. As his work developed, he drew great inspiration from the mathematical ideas he read about, often working directly from structures in plane and projective geometry, and eventually capturing the essence of non-Euclidean geometries. He was also fascinated with paradox and "impossible" figures, and used an idea of Roger Penroseās to develop many intriguing works of art. M.C. Escher became fascinated by the regular Division of the Plane, when he first visited the Alhambra, a fourteen century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain in 1922. His exposure to the Islamic inspired tilings found in Moorish architecture was a significant influence leading to a lifelong study of tiling. == Generative Art Connections == Art work of MC Escher cannot be said as true generative art work as most of his work was hand drawn. His notes from his research with tiling shows that he formulated set of rules to produce complex tiling patterns which shows the generative nature in his works. His work with tiling and tessellations lays the foundation of the type of generative art work we see today. His work with tiling was done without the benefit of a background in mathematics. This was of little matter as at the time the mathematics of tiling, and associated considerations for coloring, was obscure at best. Some of his artwork visually depicted the phenomena which was later recognized as fractals. Inspired from his work with tessellations some generative artist have implemented geometric algorithms similar to Escher's notes into computer programs to produce interesting patterns. == Generative Works == To be added later == Quotes and Bibliography == There are number of books which have been written about Escher's work: * The magic mirror of M.C. Escher By Bruno Ernst, Maurits Cornelis Escher * M.C. Escher, the graphic work By Maurits Cornelis Escher * M.C.
